I am an Assistant Professor of Global China Studies at NYU Shanghai, affiliated with the Center for Global Asia and NYU’s Department of Anthropology. Currently, I serve as the Co-Chair of the Association for Queer Anthropology. My research explores the intersection of media technologies and marginalized communities, particularly focusing on queer individuals and racial minorities. I utilize ethnographic, discursive, and critical methodologies to address these subjects.
My interdisciplinary scholarship has been published in journals such as New Media & Society, Information, Communication & Society, the Journal of Linguistic Anthropology, Sexualities, Media, Culture & Society, Feminist Media Studies, and the Journal of Asian Studies. I have been honored with several awards, including the Dissertation of the Year Award from the GLBTQ Studies Division and the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Asian/Pacific American Communication Studies Division and Caucus at the National Communication Association (2021). I have also received fellowships and grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Anthropological Association, and the Association for Asian Studies.
Before joining NYU Shanghai, I was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for the Study of Contemporary China. I hold a PhD in Communication Studies (Rhetoric and Public Culture) with a certificate in Gender and Sexuality Studies from Northwestern University.
